How to Pass AVE in 2023 [Complete Guideline]

What Is AVE?

The Australasian Veterinary Examination or AVE is a licensing exam conducted by the Australian Veterinary Board Council and the Veterinary Council of New Zealand which allows the candidates to practice as a veterinarian in Australia or New Zealand. The purpose of this exam is to evaluate the clinical expertise of overseas veterinary doctors who are graduates of non-accredited universities. This exam is conducted in Australia and New Zealand but overseas veterinarians can take this exam in the Prometric centres of their home country. In This article we are going to share you with some important information which will help you to pass this exam.

Some veterinarians can practice in Australia or New Zealand without taking this exam if they have the following credentials.

  • Those who have passed the National Examination Board along with NAVLE  and are certified by the ECFVG program.
  • Those who are registered members of the RCVS and passed the respective licensing test and worked in UK.

How To Apply As an Overseas Veterinarian?

In the following steps we are going to tell you the procedure you have yo go through while you are applying for this licensing exam.

  •   First, the candidate should pass the English proficiency exam (IELTS or TOEFL) with the required bands.
  •   Next you have to go through credential assessment at AVBC.
  • Then the candidate must write an application with all the documents attached to it. When the application is accepted then you will go for the next step.
  • Now you will be required to take the prelaminary examination. This exam is conducted in Australia and New Zealand and also in prometric centres of overseas countries as well.
  • Now the last step is the clinical examination which has two section i.e. oral and practical examination. You need to pass atleast six of the nine sections to pass this clinical exam which you have to take in Australia or New Zealand.
  • The month of registration for AVE is April.

Exam Pattern

The prelaminary exam has two sections, paper one with 120 MCQS and paper 2 with 100 MCQS. In paper one which is conducted to evaluate your basic veterinary knowledge. While in paper two which is for assessing your clinical reasoning (questions related to disease diagnosis). There are limited number of attempts for this exam. If the candidate fails to pass the exam three-times, then he has to wait for atleast two years prior to retaking the exam. So make sure to have counselling from a member of AVE Comittee.  Here is the test pattern of prelaminary examination.

  4. General and Clinical Pathology 15 MCQs
  5. Infectious diseases 15 MCQs
  6. Pharmacology 6 MCQs
  7. Therapeutics 10 MCQs
  8. Public health 10 MCQs
  9.  Professional Practice 5 MCQs
  10. Surgery and Anaesthesia 15 MCQs
